Are You Ready For A Hurricane

By Staff Writer on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 - 14:03

We have been lucky this year with a mild tropical storm season but as Hurricane Danielle heads towards Bermuda it is a good reminder to be prepared in the event of a Hurricane.

Hurricanes come with a variety of disasters, storm surges, high winds, tornadoes and flooding and it is imperative that you and your dog are prepared.  Every family in areas that are hit by hurricanes should have the following items ready in the event that disaster strikes.

A Plan
You should have an active plan as to who is watching out for the dog.  If you are forced to evacuate one individual should be assigned to each dog.  That individual is in charge of evacuating that dog and keeping track of it.

A Disaster Kit
You should have a full disaster kit with water, food and supplies for your dog ready.  It is best to keep one in the car for evacuations and one at home incase you are forced to stay and wait it out or are forced to leave behind your dog.

First Aid Kits
Again this is good to have in the car and at home.  As the disaster hits it will be likely that veterinary services will be shut down.  You should have enough supplies to get by and get to safety.

Documents
You should have all of your dogs medical records ready and have a copy of a lost dog poster with contact info that is up to date in the event your dog gets lost or separated from you.

You should always be prepared and encourage others to do the same.  If you have friends encourage them to stock up on water and food for their pets as well so that you wont be forced to share scarce resources in times of need.
