Learning to read is difficult and some children have a harder time than others.  Programs like the Delta Society have found that having animals around can actually help children, particularly those with disabilities, learn.  The thought is that having the presence of a dog is calming allowing children to focus more on the task at hand.  Many libraries and schools are now taking heed and bringing dogs in for special reading times.  If it works so well for them why not try it at home.

In addition to helping children with reading, the Delta Society also found that dogs can help children in a variety of ways:

  • Owning a pet enhances a child’s self-esteem.

  • Having pets teaches children responsibility and respect towards other living beings.

  • Children owning a pet are more involved in activities such as sports, hobbies, clubs or chores.

  • Having an animal during therapy sessions or other animal-assisted activities/treatment shows significant improvements in the treatment procedures of a child suffering from an ailment.

If those the above aren't good enough reasons for parents to get a dog for their children than we don't know what would be!
