Fourth Of July Safety For Your Pup

Fourth of July, Safety, Summer - By Staff Writer on Monday, June 14, 2010 - 13:45

As you make plans to celebrate the 4th with friends and family please keep your pup in mind.  Below are some tips for keeping the celebrations dog friendly:

Monitor dogs at all times around swimming pools - some pools have high ledges making it difficult for your pup to get out of if it falls in.  Keep a close eye around Fido around pools and open water.

BBQ's are Hot! - Some dogs just cannot pull themselves away from sizzling meat and will do anything to get it even if it means knocking over a portable grill.  Always watch dogs closely when grilling, especially when they are a known thief.

Drinking if for people only
- do not let your guests give your dog alcohol.  Dogs can get very sick and become aggressive if given alcohol.  While they might think it is funny it can lead to a dangerous situation for your dog and your guests.

Watch the food
- Dogs have a tendency to hoover anything insight regardless of how healthy it is.  Watch your dog around the food table.  Just few common BBQ things to watch:

Corncobs - not digestible and will need to be removed
Chicken bones - if cooked will splinter and cut their intestines
Chocolate - can lead to death so watch the brownies
Onions - can make your dog very ill

Fireworks are not fun for doggies- The loud noise can spook pups so make sure your dog is in a secure location where they will not run away.  Avoid bringing your dog to the major firework displays around the city - it may be pretty for you but it is scary for them.

Watch the heat - Make sure your pup has some shade and water at all times.
