Dry dog food is a common source of Salmonella, according to new research. In an article for Pediatrics, Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh of the US CDC says that contact with pets and their environment (a.k.a. dog bowls and toys) can cause human infection. If you happen to feed your dog in the kitchen then you and your family is even more at risk, about 4 times, of getting sick from Salmonella.
While children are the most likely to get sick, probably since they touch things and immediately suck on their hands, they are not at risk if they try to eat the food. It would appear that the food itself can leave the bacteria on bowls and in their environment (a.k.a. all over your house) when they slobber and drop drool. The bacteria then multiplies to harmful levels.
